Yesterday afternoon there was a Solitary Sandpiper just down from the parking lot on the Loop Trail. I haven't seen too many of them in July most of them showing up later in August. Lots of Bank Swallows still buzzing around (clearly had a nesting colony somewhere to the northwest of the park) and our young Trumpeter Swan is there daily. In the picnic area there's a Willow Flycatcher that will make the rounds in the newly-planted trees among the picnic tables and put on a good show catching insects including grabbing big ants off the ground. We've enjoyed watching it at close range several times now.

On Friday there was a Solitary Sandpiper along the Loop Trail again. It flushed off a log and flew west. I think it landed but couldn't find it. It was a nice morning there. I was watching for a Black and White Warbler that had been reported earlier in the week but with no luck. Our swan continues and was closer to the viewing platform for once. Three American Wigeon were first for me early into this fall migration. The Bank Swallows had some of their young hunting over the lake with some adults seen feeding young on the wing. This young Common Yellowthroat was quite curious. 019_9361 by Gord G, on Flickr I just counted the species in my notebook and while I thought it was a busy morning I did not know I hit 50 species until now!

This evening while in the yard two Common Nighthawks flew over making their cool calls. Shortly after Solitary Sandpiper went over calling several times. This is the second time over the years here this has happen.
