American Redstart Island 22 June 1

Today I had my first American Redstart at Island 22. It was nice to see Kevin and Wendy today who reported seeing one earlier. Later on, I could hear one singing in the western part of the equestrian area. Might have been the same one they had seen. Great to see that they have returned to the site again.
There was also an Eastern Kingbird on the eastern dyke. Several Lazuli Buntings singing in various locations but most at the eastern end. River is high and parts of the equestrian area is flooded now. Mostquitos are not too bad yet.

A male American Redstart near south boundary of park. Near the constriction where a wet area exists. Now however there are large and fairly deep flooded areas all over. I had rubber boots and had to navigate and backtrack to get there. Easiest way is due south from boat launch. Good luck, Ed

There are four singing males at Island now. Three are at the SW end of the equestrian area and the other just east of the boat launch.

It's a good year for American Redstarts in the Fraser Valley as there are two at Cheam Lake as well. One on the Loop Trail and the other easily heard from the parking lot. This guy has been singing just behind the toilet buildings. This would be the first time we have possible breeding activity in the park; all other records to date were of spring or fall migrants.
