I think the right bird looks good for teal. I'd think GWTE but maybe blue-winged (?). Left I think is possibly juv AMWI
You have any other angles?

I change my mind on the left bird. I think it's a Mallard. Bill and head shape doesn't match wigeon.
Right I get the feeling it's less compact than a GW.... so leaning towards BW.

Agree with mallard based on second photo and I'm going with teal sp. for the bird on the right

The one on the right looks like a teal for sure, but not small enough to be a Green-winged. Thanks guys

I would be cautious about judging subtle differences in size (ie between blue-winged and green-winged teal) based on this photo alone. I'm not convinced you can call this a blue-winged definitively based on this photo - especially given that it is an infrequent bird in the area.
I would lean towards green-winged based on it being more common and I can't convince myself of a pale spot at the base of the bill.
Great discussion!

My initial thought was green-winged on the right before I scrolled down. And in the spirit of openness I got a Gadwall feel from the one on the left I looked for that pale spot too at the base of the bill and don't see it. The bill looks a bit big but still ok for Green-winged? Thanks for sharing, Joel. Great to have good ID questions. Helps all of us learn as we ponder these questions.

Gadwall crossed my mind as well for the bird on the left!
