This morning at 10:00 I saw something rather large sitting in the tree. I often see the resident squirrel there, so I thought it was that. It was moving a bit weirdly though. It was a Barred Owl roosting. It was asleep but woke up often to preen and look around. Sleeping Barred Owl by Jamie, on Flickr It lovingly preened its feathers, scratched its head, and cleaned its talons. It was interesting how it ran its feathers through its beak. (Barred Owl) by Jamie, on Flickr It yawned frequently. It wasn't long before the chickadees came and started insulting the owl. The owl just looked annoyed. Before long the chickadees got distracted and left. Barred Owl close by Jamie, on Flickr The owl woke up often and looked around but then went back to sleep. He was a nice looking bird. Then it silently flew away for a night of hunting. There are definitely Barred Owls in the neighborhood. On Halloween one flew by and landed in a tree before taking off again. A week before there was a pair fighting and making hooting sounds. It's nice to have them around because they help keep the rodent population in check.
