Species #20 showed up this afternoon....a Red Breasted Sapsucker! I guess I missed reporting #19....those were some Golden Crowned Kinglets that were going over the cedar trees one afternoon. I'm still waiting for a Fox Sparrow to show up....I peer at every Song Sparrow out there...there are lots of Fox Sparrows over at Eagle Point and it's not that far away......

Species #21 - a Bald Eagle! No, I don't count what flies over, but when one sits (or at least tries to) on the spindly top of a cedar tree in the yard....he gets counted!
Species #22 - a Robin....spring must be on it's way.

The birds certainly know where you are! We are bereft of birds at our feeder! Just a few little stragglers once in awhile. By the way, we loved the December notes on your website but we went to Kathy's Korner today and couldn't see it. It said HTTP 404 Not Found. Hope you are enjoying the sun.

#23.....was having my morning coffee and watched a female Hairy Woodpecker work over the bark on one of my Cedar Trees.
We're off to the island for the next 3 weeks.....hope the interruption in food supply won't set us back too much! At least we should be back before the summer visitors start arriving.

We don't often get a new yard bird here, after keeping a list for 10 or a dozen years. Kathy's Hairy Woodpecker would be a new species for our urban city lot.
Today, however, was "sparrow day." We've had a Song Sparrow and one or two White-crowned Sparrows around fairly regularly all winter in our yard, and a Fox Sparrow (first one in several years) has stopped in for the last couple of weeks. Today we had both a White-throated Sparrow and Golden-crowned Sparrow as well. The Spotted Towhee hasn't been seen for several days, but there are still lots of juncos, including at least one Slate-colored, and another that may be a hybrid. We had our first White-throated Sparrow for a few days last November, and I have wondered if it was somewhere nearby all winter, but today's was a white-striped morph while the other was a tan-striped morph. I haven't kept track, but I don't remember ever having 20 species in a day here. We had 19 one day earlier this winter, and 18 today. With a little luck, a towhee and a flicker or downy, we would have broken 20. As some have mentioned, I count anything seen in, over or from my yard for my yard list.
I guess I'd better give my list, in case anyone wondered. Bald Eagle, Glaucous-winged Gull, Northwestern Crow, European Starling, American Robin, Steller's Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Bushtit, Song Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, House Finch, Pine Siskin, House Sparrow.
Even with a small yard, maintaining a variety of feeders, a brushpile and a few shrubs for shelter, and patience, can lead to a nice list with time. We used to keep a bird bath out, too, but we stopped because of the raccoons.

Back from the island and the interruption in food supply doesn't seem to have slowed things down for a minute. Have done some rearranging of feeders and added some new ones and the last couple of days have been pretty good in the bird department. A flash of yellow going past the window this morning alerted me to species #24 - American Goldfinch. I'm still waiting for a Hummingbird to show up....there are two feeders filled and waiting.
Here is the list of what I am getting right now:
Pine Sisken ~ I bought one of those 'socks' on the weekend and hung it up and within minutes some pine sisken arrived.
Steller's Jay ~ they are a given.....5 or 6 most days
Junco ~ regulars but not a lot of them. Have seen about 9 of them today. That is the most for a while
Song Sparrow ~ usually a couple White Crowned sparrow ~ one most days, occasionally two
Varied Thrush ~ the one legged female has shown up again and seems to have adopted my yard.
Purple Finch ~ had 3 pairs today.
Red Wing Blackbird ~ a male and a female today.
Robins
Black Cap Chickadee ~ a couple showed up yesterday but they aren't here very often.
House Finch are in the area but haven't seen one at the feeders the last couple of days, also the Towhee hasn't been spotted yet today but I'm sure he is around. I hear Flickers in the area but I gave up on putting out suet because of the raccoons. I'm planning on getting a bird bath soon....I hope the raccoons won't be too much of a problem with that as well.
