My dad and I went to the Pitt Lake marshes this past Friday. This was only my second visit there, and it was cool to see the place outside of winter. At one point we came across a Painted turtle next to the path that appeared to be laying eggs in a nest. I heard a Sandhill crane calling briefly somewhere in the distance. I also saw a Cliff swallow colony under a cliff overhang, at the base of the mountain next to the marsh. Several flocks of Band-tailed pigeons flew past as well. There was a handful of Willow flycatchers along the dyke: Willow flycatcher by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr One of the Osprey nests: Osprey nest by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr The only downside was walking through the southwest part of the triangle loop, which is almost overgrown and hard to follow. Other than that we had a good walk. I counted over 30 species.
