Went to the east side of Burnaby Lake last Wednesday. There was a great variety of birds, mostly songbirds but also some waterfowl. In total I saw and/or heard 37 species. I heard persistent begging calls and eventually spotted a Downy woodpecker nest: Downy woodpecker nestling by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr Also came across this unusually-small goose: Cackling goose by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr I can't tell if it's a Cackler or just a smaller Canada. Some Wood ducks on a piling at Piper Spit: Wood ducks by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr This was my first visit here. Definitely want to come back in Fall.

Nice post! Yes looks like a cackling goose to me. Interesting that it's banded...
