Thank you all for weighing in... I admit when I read the “debate” I feel slightly better - I often get “stumped” with flycatchers... and I am also grateful that you offered your perspectives and why... a great community to learn with and from. Thank you.

Thanks for your perspective... I think what is stumping me is that (from what I understand...) the bill of a Hammond’s is shorter, thinner and darker. I am including another perspective that is causing the confusion for me... Untitled by Gabi Cuff, on Flickr

I notice that I get very sad/mad thinking about declining populations. I have, however, spotted Rufus Hummingbirds along the Matsqui Dyke (there are at least 3 males in just a short part of the trail by Paige Road) and I have also spotted them in other walks in the Lower Mainland. Every year I have had a tenacious male or two at my feeders and this year, none so far. Females, yes.

I had my first Rufous sightings on Mar. 29 - 2 males - And my first rufous at my feeder - April 1 - a sweet little gal - much later than last year (first sighting was Mar. 20). Spotted 3 male on April 1 when I walked the lower trail at Paige Road. Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) by Gabi Cuff, on Flickr
