There is a western scrub jay on Southlands Cr near Robertson Elementary right now. It is calling loudly and should be easy to find.

I just went out to again one last time before class started. I can still hear the bird, but it's moving around the neighbourhood. About half of its vocalizations are Stellar's imitations, so be sure to investigate any jay call that you hear in the area.

Good find Harrier. They certainly seem to be establishing themselves north of their original range. You probably know that the first confirmed breeding pair with successful fledging occurred last year in Maple Ridge. I wonder if this bird could be related to that family?

Hi all,
The Western Scrub Jay was still with 6 Steller's Jays along Southlands Crescent at 10:55.
Good Birding,

I'm just heading home soon. I did a quick check and the bird doesn't seem to be around at the moment. I wasn't able to get any photos today, so I'm hoping that some of you will have a few to post. Gord, great to meet you today!

Thank-you "Harrier" for finding and quickly reporting the Scrub-Jay. I found it this morning in just a few minutes as it flew with Steller's Jays from the trees south of the school. It is a new Fraser Valley bird for me, one which I'd been hoping for ever since I missed the one at my sister-in-laws place in Abbotsford! She had emailed a photo of the bird in her yard at that moment but by the time I got there it had moved on and I couldn't find it. John Vooys, Abbotsford

It was pretty exciting for me; I haven't discovered a rarity for a long time.

Great find and it was good to meet you too. Thanks! Thanks also to Jamie for letting me know of the sighting as the bird was literally 10 seconds from where I was going this morning. Here's a documentation photo I managed to get. This afternoon I saw it on Brooks at Elm. It appeared to be on its own. Glad to see others got a chance to see it and I hope it sticks around.

The Jay was waiting for me this morning at the southwest corner of Southlands. It is quite a noisy bird!

The Scrub Jay was in the vicinity just after noon today. I saw and heard Stellar's Jays South of the school so I drove around to little Hilton Park and found it there! It was making a ruckus! First Scrub Jay in Canada for me! Ed Klassen

Ed, well done and congrats to you. At the end of the day today I didn't see it where I did this morning but I was only there for a couple minutes. I got very lucky with a photo too. Much better than yesterday's.

Thank you for sharing your sighting! I went out this morning and got a chance to see it. It was actively feeding, not sure whether they were acorns or hazel nuts. There were a number of Steller's Jays around also but it's call is a little different so it was easy to locate by that alone. Any bird which is "blue" are particular favorites of mine. If we could just have a true Blue Jay show up I would be ecstatic! A word of caution it is a residential neighborhood, so residents might be a little put out by people with scopes, binoculars and cameras. Try to keep them off people's windows.
