Gray Catbirds - Two locations
On Saturday, June 15 Gary Kalyn and I decided to see if we could find any evidence of breeding catbirds in the area of Seabird Island where I had found them two years ago on June 21 2011. Within a minute of arriving we had one. Then this morning on a walk along the dyke of Maria Slough, just north of Cuthbert Rd. another one. The second bird is about eight kms. from the first so no doubt about there being two different birds. These birds are mimics and while I watched, it sang first the call of a Black-headed Grosbeak and then made a perfect Willow Flycatcher call. It cooperated nicely for the camera as well.

Well done Gary and Murray. There is a lot of good habitat on the north side of the river for a few Catbirds.

Janne, you must have posted about the same time Murray did! Murray was having a technical glitch with the forum so I started the thread so he could reply. Here are some pictures of the bird from Maria Slough that Murray took today. Nicely done!

Kevin, I saw the one above again this morning the 21st. As the "catbird flies" he's probably only a couple of kilometers from your house so keep your eyes peeled.
