This afternoon I got word of a pair of scrub-jays on Hazel Street. I stopped by just now and saw both right away. They’ve been there for about three weeks. They are at 5822 and are ok with people watching from the sidewalk or vehicle. Naturally, practice perfect conduct if having a look to not make the homeowner regret their generosity.
First time I’ve seen two at once. Wonder if they have a nest near by? One quietly flew somewhere near while the other hung out at the top or the holly tree they seem to favour on the left side of the house.

I visit the area frequently over the past few years. Never seen one. Maybe they are nesting this year. Who knows?

Thanks to Bentley catching a terrible typo on the address. 9522 it should be!

I cycled passed the location twice without seeing either one but this evening I saw one on top of the tree behind the house.

I stopped by around 430pm today and there was one on top of the Maple tree behind 4534 Hazel which is right beside 4522. It was hard to tell as the tree is at the back of the property. the jay dropped down a few feet into the tree and it looks like a nest in there... would not bet money on it though unless I take the spotting scope down and look.

Dan, there or in the holly tree for a nest I agree. Two continue today here. No babies yet or carrying food but I wonder if jays would fill their throat pouch with grub and bring it to the young that way. It would be harder to see that kind of breeding evidence.

Saw one today at its favourite perch at the top of the holly tree where it spent several minutes. Really looks like one adult keeping an eye on things while the other sits on a nest nearby.

JUVENILE! I stopped by for a bit this afternoon. The resident pointed me in the direction to where the birds were hanging out today. Calls were coming from three directions. In my head, I thought there could be three; but to be safe I marked two down. Upon reviewing my photos, I found a juvenile. Very cool to have confirmed breeding in Chilliwack. Hope they come back next year!

Bentley, awesome work documenting the juvenile.
Will be interesting to see if this pair stays in the location or goes somewhere else.

I was wondering the same thing as well. A friend of mine lives nearby and she has a feeder out and will be watching for them.
Great stuff, Bentley!

We stopped by briefly yesterday and there was an adult at its usual spot at the top of the holly tree. Moving around in the tree below were at least three others jay-sized birds.
