There was a little drama in the yard today with our young Cooper's Hawk going after a House Finch. The finch was out in the open and the hawk was following closely behind. In short order a Merlin dove in and tried for the finch as well. It was interesting (at risk of sounding non-nonchalant about the finch's plight) to see two hunting styles being used. The hawk, as previously mentioned, opted for staying as close as possible and following the finch's twists and turns. The Merlin would swoop in at high speed and when missing, would gain a bit of altitude, gauge the finch's position and dive in again. Surprisingly the finch did ok and they went out of the sight with the finch still doing ok despite the two attackers.
