After lunch and a siesta, we spent a good hour watching the feeders in a yard that's open to birders. The place was a hive of activity, with a big variety of birds present. One of a few Curve-billed thrashers: Curve-billed thrasher by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr There were Black-throated sparrows: Black-throated sparrow by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr As well as a Yellow-breasted chat: Yellow-breasted chat by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr And a couple of Pyrrhuloxia (the bird on the right): Pyrrhuloxia by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr Afterwards, we went for a walk around Portal. Among other birds, we got a Northern Beardless-tyrannulet and a Bronzed cowbird. One of about three Inca doves that we came across: Inca dove by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr We also had good views of a young Great Horned owl in its nest: Great Horned owl by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr At dusk, we went for a drive east of Portal. Quite a few Lesser nighthawks came swooping by at different times. Just across the state line in New Mexico, we spotted an Eastern meadowlark on a fencepost. Back in Arizona, we were able to see a Barn owl flying low over the desert. Once it was dark, we did some owling along a mountain road. We saw Common poorwill and Mexican whip-poor-will. The biggest highlight however, was this Western screech-owl: Western screech-owl by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr

Those are really good photos Joel and you got to see some very desirable birds. Like John, Ed, and Len I have spent a fair amount of time down there and your landscape pictures bring back a lot of great memories. I also have to thank you for a new bird for my North American list! Last time I checked the Mexican Duck was still a Mallard so I will now update that list. Thanks for a very good report.
