While in Edmonton visiting family recently, I was able to do some birding at a couple of local hotspots on separate days. The second one was very productive, with 19 species being seen in total. Highlights included lots of Red- and White-breasted nuthatches, BC chickadees, Blue jays and a fly-over flock of Bohemian waxwings. I also heard a Boreal chickadee, but was unable to spot it. Saw this Great Horned owl (Alberta's provincial bird) snoozing in what is most likely its nest: Great horned owl by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr This is why I haven't revealed where I went. Heard some tapping a little ways off the trail, and managed to locate an American Three-toed woodpecker: American Three-toed woodpecker by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr

Thanks Ed! I found it tricky navigating an icy trail and looking/listening for birds at the same time. At this time of year out there, everything thaws during the day and then refreezes at night.

That’s very much like the thaw-freeze cycle on the hike up Elk Mtn in late winter spring!
