I dropped into see if the Great Egret was still around. It was hunting further back on the same farm it has been since before Christmas. It holds itself in hunting pose for a long time.
Dropped into the Jackman Wetlands Park, I have not been there since mid-fall. The park is much more flooded at this time of year and the beavers have constructed a new lodge in one of the areas that dries up in the summer, perhaps it is only winter housing.
Lots of Cackling geese in one pond and way more American Wigeons on the other with a small sprinkling of Mallards, Buffleheads and a Hooded Merganser. Not a lot of song birds calling out, a few Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrows and Chickadees. I did hear a couple of Downy Woodpeckers.
The usual problem with off leash dogs and dog crap.
At Aldergrove Regional Park I checked out the western side and found that they are constructing a children's play area in one of the best birding areas in the park. Likely the creek will end up filled with garbage and the nesting birds will go deeper into the park or elsewhere. I did get to see the first Pileated Woodpecker I have seen since last spring.
