I did a hike of Mt. Mercer and Mt. Thurston starting as far as my Subaru could drive on Mt. Thurston Forest Service Road. Mercer is a very quick hike up from where the road crosses the ridge. On the ascent I heard the distinct troll of a Bohemian Waxwing in a cocopgany of other sounds. I looked up to see a single large waxwing flying with a flock of Pine Siskins!
On my return after summiting Thurston (and getting a little lost off trail) I found 5 Bohemian Waxwings peacefully eating berries while walking the road just under Mt. Mercer—a nice confirmation of the brief sighting earlier.
The area is accessible if you have a truck or jeep, but otherwise it might involve a good amount of hiking up the forest road.
Other notable birds included a few sooty grouse, a few hawks, and a good number of purple finches (no Cassin’s among them).
Peace
