I took a look at Kawkawa Lake in Hope Tuesday morning and saw a male Black Scoter and four hens out on the lake. A bit of a surprise and not surprisingly just the third sighting of this sea duck in the checklist area. Kawkawa Lake joins Harrison Lake in having all three scoter species documented; not a honour I thought that little lake tucked away like that would receive. I tried a documentation photo of the drake. Not sure it even qualifies as a documentation photo! Dsc_7405 by Gord G, on Flickr

Hi Gord. I checked out the late this morning around 10:30 (Wed.)and found only the drake Black Scoter. A speedboat flushed it off the water and I did not see where or if the bird landed again. There was also a Western and Red-necked Grebe as well as two Common Loons. Good birding, John Vooys

It continues today on the north end of the lake opposite the park. There is a little access there. I also saw two females briefly beyond the docks to the left of the park. The bills are so weirdly thin compared to other scoters that I thought for a minute I was seeing a merganser.
Great find Gord!
