At 10:15 September 15 a juvenile Lewis's Woodpecker was spotted flycatching from a dead cottonwood snag along Maria Slough at the end of Cuthbert Rd. It may still be in the area. Look for a very dark broad winged bird that at first glance looks like a crow. A walk along the dyke for a kilometer or two often yields some interesting bird life. Many migrating sparrows, warblers and vireos are still moving through this area.

I went by today. No woodpecker, but I did find a white throated sparrow.

Went for a drive with my friend Dave Platt yesterday from Abbotsford to Mission, right on Hwy 7, around Nicomen Island, picked up lunch in Deroche, then went on around Seabird Island, and on the way back, stopped in Agassis. Found the Lewis's Woodpecker at Cuthbert Rd and Dyke RD just south of the bridge at the top of an old dead snag. It then flew to another dead tree, then back, then left. A lifer for me, thanks murraybrown!

You're welcome Klaus, but believe it or not, that's a different bird! Yours is an adult with the pink and red markings on the belly and head. Mine was a juvenile which was all black except for a light grey breast. I have several photos and they show just how dark it is. A very interesting discovery!

That's a very nice sighting. I've yet to see a Lewis's Woodpecker. I remember at the beginning of September over 14 Lewis's Woodepckers were at Hope Airport at once. They must come by the area at this time.
