The first Goldfinch of what I hope will be many showed up around noon last Wednesday. As of today two males are here awaiting their brides.
If past years are an indication there should be at least a dozen very soon. I'm crossing my fingers because they are a lot of fun to watch and photograph.

Just past the halfway mark for the target 12! I haven't see one at my feeders for at least 4 or 5 days. I wonder what's up.................................... The hummingbirds slowed down as well and rarely visit.

I have noticed the hummingbirds aren't around as much either. Maybe getting more protein from insects now for the little ones??
My goldfinches are still going strong and had my first black-headed grosbeak of the year this morning.

There is another possibility Randy as i have noticed a sharp reduction in the numbers also. Since nobody has mentioned here on the forum i will . Two things that are related here 1, some bee keepers announced that they would not be putting their bees on Blueberry farms this year because they found fungicide residue in their bees which is interesting because last year it was announced that tests were done on Hummingbirds around blueberry farms and the same fungicide showed up in their blood tests. What they didn`t say was what this meant to the health of the birds. I have checked my spots were the Rufus were always around since 2015 and so far i have found 2 at the East end of North Parallel Rd.

That is a concerning comment. I have noticed that my usual Anna's hummingbird visitors are much less frequent. I just assume they were sitting on nests. In the last couple years I could rely on Rufous Hummingbirds to take over the feeders for a couple months but I have not had a Rufous on my feeders yet that I have seen or even heard.
