While the family and I were driving to Kelowna today, we stopped at a rest area along the Coquihalla Hwy. Besides the wonderful bathrooms, there was a lone Gray-Crowned Rosy-Finch of the Gray-crowned (well-named!) subspecies feeding on the ground. The lighting was awful the way it was, but then it flew over to the other side with much more agreeable lighting. It was extremely tame, and wasn't easily startled. I was able to get pics of it like 6 feet away, while it fed in the gravel. It didn't even fly when people walked past, talking. I could reach out and touch it (but I didn't). This was my first time seeing a Rosy-Finch, and I felt happy to be able to see one this close. Gray-crowned Rosy Finch (Hepburn's) by Jamie, on Flickr This is the Gray-crowned subspecies of Rosy-Finch, which is different than the Hepburn's subspecies that we normally see. Hepburns have gray cheeks and crown, but the Gray-crowned have brown cheeks and yep -- a gray crown. Such a creatively named subspecies. It was so good to see! *Yes the photo is labeled Hepburn's but I changed that in Flickr but it doesn't reflect that change in the forum since its just text and not live from Flickr.*
