Out in my travels I came across this flicker nest that was very active. There appeared to be two openings into the cavity and there was a little flicker waiting to be fed at each one. I ran back for my camera for a few pictures. Didnt turn out that great as it was a bit of a distance, which was ok as I didnt want to disturb the nest. (should have tried digiscope! ) While I was shooting, I noticed there only seemed to be one young flicker at the nest. I was hearing one calling constantly near by, but didnt clue in until later that it was one of the flickers, newly fledged. He was right beside the trail, and I got a shot of him. As he was in the shadows, I practiced a couple shots in an area similarly lighted to get the exposure right as I needed to use flash. I didnt want to waste a bunch of flash shots on the poor guy until I got one that worked.
