This evening at exactly 8:40 I had an Adult Male Caliope (pretty certain, considering the waning light) small bird--red at the nape of the neck--with the "gorget" expanding during flight, landing on the perch to feed--finally--was able to sort of see him well enough--actually heard the "buzz", my drapes were closed, and was able to open just enough to establish he was there! ;D ;D ;D---Al

I FINALLY got a visitor, coming to the "Bee Balm", and of course whenever I go outside--(sans camera) it shows up--just trying to move the planter a little closer to the feeder, however--it is really not that far away--I even lowered the Hummer Feeder close to the plants (flowers) but the little guy seems to prefer the flowers, hand over fist--to the feeder --however, I assume that that is a normal reaction--that if there is a choice it will go natural all the time???--a little late in the season--but then --as I have said in the past--better than nothing--and better late than never-- ;D ;D ;D---Al

Hello Al, I have found the same thing - the flowers seem to be preferred over the feeder right now. I was filling a couple times a day and now it is down to every few days, even though I keep my feeder clean and fresh. - Pat

Hi, Pat, after ruminating over the "challenge" of trying to get the Hummer to come to the feeder, I suspect that the little guy, (Gal) is this years hatch, and therefore, will automatically go for the flowers, as the genetics of the species has dictated, ergo, the colour of red for the (artificial) feeders= flowers, I am thinking that perhaps, the "recognition" of the feeder is a "learned" behaviour, and that these little ones will--perhaps, come to them more readily next year, upon their return? *Note* of Jeff's post with regards to the feeders that they are-(were) using on his trip south, to mentor one of Jeff's Ministers, perhaps Jeff--if he has a chance, can comment on the use of Hummer feeders where he mentored?--with appreciation--Al -- had to almost get my feeder out of storage, as I had kind of given up hope for any of these little ones to visit me in the time left this year

Hi Al, They do use hummingbird feeders there, though definitely less so than here, as most people cannot afford such a luxury. However, in the actual acknowledged "bird" and tourist places such as Mindo where I saw all those different kinds of hummingbirds, they did have hummingbird feeders, the regular glass tube kind. Hope this helps. Chau. --Jeff
