Keep an eye out for collared swans this winter. Again, Tundra Swan are blue with white text while Trumpeter are red and other colours. A study is underway to track movements and data we collect is very useful to the study. Email Craig Ely at cely@usgs.gov if you spot a Tundra Swan with a collar. Make note of location and date. Also, some have been outfitted with little satellite transmitters. It is amazing to see where the birds from Alaska go. Ones that breed in certain areas always seem to migrate south through the same path to the same area. Looks as though the Tundra Swans we see in our area breed in the Alaska Peninsula. Click the link below to see a map of this year's and the last year's migration routes. Keep in mind that Tundra Swans breed along most of the northern tundra and are not restricted just to Alaska. alaska.usgs.gov/science/biology/avian_influenza/TUSW/index.htmlI have attached a .pdf of the information that was sent out. It contains more details of the project. Also, to report Trumpeter Swan sightings: www.cws-scf.ec.gc.ca/nwrc-cnrf/default.asp?lang=En&n=725379F9-1Attachments:

Ed sent me the above which reminded me to 'bump' the post up for others to see.
Thanks, Ed, I had forgotten about it and was interested to see it again.
