Yesterday evening I checked the little puddle in the field to see what was in there. I was pleased to see 23 Long-billed Dowitchers working the deeper parts of the puddle. While enjoying the dowitchers I caught a glimpse of a large brown shorbird moving through the grass. Soon I discovered it to be a Pectoral Sandpiper!! It was a few minutes before I would notice there were three others lurking in the grass in true Pectoral Sandpiper fashion. Further out where about eight Least Sandpipers and a lone Killdeer. Things got better when a Lesser Yellowlegs sort of came out of nowhere and fed among the dowitchers. Never any doubt about how small they are compared to the bigger and longer/thicker billed Greater Yellowlegs. Suddenly the dowitchers, yellowlegs and peeps flew up in a fuss, the Pectorals melted into the grass and the swallows scattered. Here's why. The Peregine Falcon (that's a poor picture, you'll have to take my word for it) singled out a dowitcher but was not able to catch it even after a solid attempt. As it was getting late and darker and the area was suddenly a little sparse for birds I headed home. These little parcels of 'junk land' sure are vital for migrating birds. Ive had ten shorebird species in this field this spring.

Added a new species this morning on my way to work. A female (the females are much brighter than males in Phalaropes) Wilson's Phalarope was resting on the pond. I dont think I've ever spotted a Phalarope in Chilliwack before!

As Ive sort of eluded that this area is near my house I should probably share to members and not give the road name and broadcast to the world (not that it probably really matters). Dont hesitate to message me if interested in where this little pond is as Ill be glad to share it!
