This morning on the dyke I saw a small loon out on the Fraser swimming downstream. Turned out to be a juvenile Red-throated Loon! It ended up hanging around the boat launch for awhile. Unfortunately the foggy/mist made getting a picture rather difficult. I checked my records and this is the first one Ive seen in the checklist area since 2004! Another juvenile was documented, again in the Fraser River this time near the mouth of the Sumas River, on October 7. Now going off memory I believe we've had two others between 2004 and now; one on Mill Lake from Stan and another by Len on the Fraser River near the Mission Bridge. Certainly not at all a common species up here although quite common out in the Pacific and I've seen several from good vantage points such as Tswasswan and so forth.

Must be as a good part of bird watching (like fishing) is being at the right place at the right time. The more you're out, the better odds are of bumping into something neat!

This morning the juvenile or another juvenile Red-throated Loon was in the river off Island 22. This time traded fog for distance in trying for a photo.
